LOCAL EXPLORATION · CHAPTER 1.9
Choose what follows a sus chord
Keep C and G in place. Choose a second chord, hear the complete pair, and notice the middle note.
Whole notes mark each four-beat bar. The outlined chord is playing. The piano lets each chord go a little early before the next attack; the common notes are reattacked too.
Ready. Press Play to hear both chords.
Editing a choice stops playback. Press Play to hear the new pair from the beginning. “Keep the sus” repeats it with a fresh attack.
Try all three continuations from Csus2, then from Csus4. Which difference catches your ear in this piano example?
Try it on your instrument
Keep C and G, and choose D or F between them. Repeat the chord, then try moving that middle note to E or E♭. Listen to each complete pair. Every continuation here is available; a sus chord can remain a stable colour.
This is an ungraded local candidate awaiting Doug’s listening. The quiet sampled piano uses the existing Common Tone ensemble. Its shared preparation also loads existing bass and drum recordings; only the two piano chords sound here.
